An
illustration of a scenes from "The Lord of
Paderne" a novel by Pedro
Oliveira Pinto.
"I
had wished to die on the day I had lost Rita. At the
service station, Rita had stayed in the car. She was
feeling sick. Three months pregnant. I went into the
toilet after buying a cold drink. I wasn’t even 5
minutes. When I was leaving, I noticed a person who was
washing his hands in the washbasin and blood was running
down the plughole. The medallion that I had brought her
from Mexico, with an Aztec warrior. It was identical to
the one under the washbasin. I left and a shiver ran
through my body. The door of the car was open. A shoe on
the floor. Rita had been pulled out of the car and her
body was a few metres from the vehicle, with her dress
dirty with blood and her throat cut. I feel to my knees
and clasped her. It was the police that took Rita from
my arms. On that day I had wanted to die. "
